Frozen Pipes

Why did my pipe freeze?

Water expands when it freezes. This expansion puts an extreme amount of pressure on your pipes regardless if it is made of PVC, copper, or metal. This pressure can cause the pipes inside your home to freeze, and even worse, burst.

When pipes are exposed to the extreme cold on a consistent basis, they run a high risk of freezing. Water supply lines that are most likely to freeze are those that run along an exterior wall of your home, reside outside, or run through an unheated area of your house.

Experiencing Frozen Pipes

One of the first signs of a frozen pipe inside of your home is turning on a plumbing fixture and experiencing little to no water flow. If you experience a “no water flow” situation, the first thing you want to do is turn off the main water valve to your property.

It is important that you do not attempt to thaw out any pipes that you feel may be frozen with an open flame such as a torch. It is also dangerous to attempt pipe thawing with a hair dryer or electric heater. If water leaks then you will run the risk of getting electrocuted!

The Suburban Plumbing Experts recommend calling a professional to thaw out your frozen pipes. You want to take care of the situation promptly because frozen pipes have a tendency to burst. Water damage from burst pipes can be catastrophic and extremely costly. Our licensed experts have the knowledge and experience that is required to unthaw your frozen pipes in a safe and efficient manner.

Going out of town in the winter

If you are going out of town in the winter or are relocating to a warmer climate, you run a high risk of experiencing frozen pipes. To reduce the risk a frozen pipe, make sure you turn off the main water valve to your home before you leave.

Although your house will be empty, do not completely turn off your heat. It is best to set the temperatures lower than you normally would. The Suburban Plumbing Experts recommend setting your thermostat to go no lower than 60 degrees. You may also want to have someone check on your house periodically for those days when the temperature is well below zero.
