Suburban Plumbing Experts provides fast, reliable grease trap cleaning and maintenance for restaurants, food service operations, and commercial kitchens throughout Chicago and the surrounding suburbs. From routine scheduled pumping to emergency cleanouts and heavy grease removal, we deliver full-service solutions designed to keep your system operating efficiently and up to code.

Full-Service Grease Trap Cleaning for Commercial Kitchens

We understand that every commercial kitchen operates differently, which is why we provide grease trap solutions tailored to your specific workflow and volume. Whether you're managing a high-volume restaurant, school cafeteria, hotel kitchen, or fast-food operation, proper grease trap maintenance is essential for preventing costly clogs, avoiding health code violations, and keeping your kitchen running smoothly during peak service hours.

Our full-service approach covers everything from start to finish. We evaluate your grease trap system, recommend a maintenance schedule based on your kitchen’s output, and perform thorough cleaning that meets or exceeds local health department standards. With years of experience serving Chicago’s diverse food service industry—from neighborhood pizzerias to major venues like Soldier Field, and national chains including Panda Express and Subway—we understand what it takes to keep commercial kitchens operating efficiently at any scale.

Regular professional maintenance not only helps prevent emergency shutdowns, but also extends the lifespan of your plumbing infrastructure, saving thousands in long-term repair and replacement costs. Our team works efficiently and can schedule service during off-peak hours whenever possible to minimize disruption and keep your kitchen fully operational.

Professional Grease Pumping & Waste Disposal

Our vacuum pump truck service provides safe, efficient removal of grease, oils, fats, and solid waste from commercial grease traps. We remove not just liquid buildup, but all accumulated material—including heavy sludge at the bottom and hardened grease layers at the top—to ensure your system is fully cleared and operating correctly. This complete evacuation helps prevent premature buildup that can lead to backups, slow drainage, and costly interruptions.

We strictly follow all Chicago and Illinois environmental regulations for grease disposal, transporting waste to certified treatment facilities. This ensures your business remains compliant with municipal requirements while protecting local sewer systems and waterways. Improper grease disposal can lead to serious fines and violations—our certified process eliminates that risk entirely.

Establishing a consistent pumping schedule is essential for preventing foul odors, sanitary issues, and kitchen disruptions. We work with your operation to determine the right frequency based on volume and usage—whether weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, or quarterly service is needed. High-output kitchens may require more frequent pumping, while smaller operations can often extend intervals safely.

During every service visit, our technicians also inspect your grease trap for early signs of damage such as cracks, leaks, or worn components, helping you avoid unexpected failures and expensive emergency repairs.

Thorough Grease Trap Inspections & Preventative Maintenance Programs

Cleaning alone is not enough—regular inspections are essential for identifying potential issues before they turn into costly emergencies or health code violations. During every service visit, our licensed technicians carefully inspect your grease trap for signs of wear, corrosion, structural damage, improper installation, or excessive buildup that may indicate the need for adjusted service frequency.

We evaluate all critical components, including baffles, inlet and outlet pipes, gaskets, covers, and the trap body. Damaged or missing baffles can allow grease to bypass the system entirely and enter your sewer lines, leading to severe blockages. Cracks, corrosion, or structural failure in the trap body can also result in leaks, sanitation issues, and property damage if not addressed early. Routine inspections help catch these problems before they escalate into expensive repairs or violations.

Our preventative maintenance programs are tailored to your kitchen’s specific demands. We factor in your menu type, cooking volume, hours of operation, and trap size to build a customized schedule that keeps your system compliant and performing reliably year-round. With scheduled service in place, you don’t have to track maintenance—we handle reminders and scheduling for you.

For multi-location restaurant operators, we also provide coordinated maintenance across all Chicago-area facilities, with consolidated invoicing and detailed service records to simplify compliance and inspection reporting. We’ve supported regional chains and growing restaurant groups with scalable programs that keep every location consistent, compliant, and inspection-ready.

High-Pressure Hydro Jetting for Stubborn Blockages

When standard pumping isn't enough to address hardened grease deposits, tree root intrusion, or completely blocked drain lines, our professional hydro jetting service provides the solution. This powerful technique uses high-pressure water streams—up to 4,000 PSI—to completely scour the interior of your grease trap and connected drain lines, removing even the most stubborn accumulations that mechanical cleaning methods can't touch.

Hydro jetting doesn't just poke a hole through blockages like traditional sewer rodding, it thoroughly cleans the entire pipe diameter, removing grease that's adhered to pipe walls and restoring full flow capacity. This comprehensive cleaning prevents recurring clogs and extends the time between necessary services. For restaurants experiencing frequent sewage backups despite regular pumping, hydro jetting often reveals and resolves underlying issues like grease that's migrated past the trap into your main drain lines.

The process is safe for your plumbing system when performed by trained professionals. Our technicians know exactly how to adjust water pressure and flow rates for different pipe materials and conditions, ensuring effective cleaning without risking damage to your plumbing infrastructure. We often recommend hydro jetting as a periodic deep-cleaning service, perhaps annually or semi-annually depending on your kitchen's grease production—to complement regular pumping and maintain optimal drain flow.

This preventative approach is especially valuable for older Chicago buildings with aging cast iron or clay sewer pipes that are particularly susceptible to grease accumulation and root intrusion. By keeping lines thoroughly clean, you reduce the risk of catastrophic backups that could force you to close your kitchen during repairs.

Emergency Grease Trap Cleaning - 24/7 Service

Grease trap emergencies can happen without warning, and when they do, they can quickly shut down kitchen operations, create hazardous conditions, and put your business at risk of health code violations. Overflowing traps, severe blockages, and strong odors all require immediate attention to prevent downtime and further damage.

Our team provides 24/7 emergency grease trap cleaning throughout Chicago and the surrounding suburbs, ensuring fast response when your kitchen needs help most. We arrive fully equipped to remove heavy buildup, pump waste safely, and restore proper drainage as quickly as possible to get your operation back on track.

With licensed emergency plumbers in Chicago and professional-grade equipment, we handle urgent grease trap issues efficiently and in full compliance with local regulations—helping you minimize disruption, protect your staff and customers, and keep your business running.

The Key Function of Grease Trap Maintenance in Chicago Area Commercial Kitchens

Chicagoland's diverse food culture, which boasts a rich history and innovative food concepts, depends significantly on the efficient operation of its commercial kitchens. The grease trap is the unsung hero of such activity, trapping fats, oils, and greases, which are a natural byproduct of daily cooking and food preparation. Without periodic upkeep and professional cleaning, however, these chemicals will accumulate in a matter of minutes, leading to total clogging of plumbing, foul odors, and health hazards posing threats to public health. The area's rigorous environmental as well as health regulations make it necessary for routine grease trap cleaning for businesses and restaurants to ensure restaurants and businesses remain up to sanitary standards and minimize environmental impact.

Regular and ongoing cleaning saves businesses from hefty fines, prevents business disruption, and demonstrates their commitment towards safeguarding the environment. Regular maintenance also prolongs plumbing infrastructure life, reducing the cost of repairing or replacing high-cost equipment. It is clear that neglecting grease trap maintenance has long-term repercussions, not just affecting the immediate health and safety but also the long-term viability of the business in the Chicago areas competitive restaurant market.

Optimal Commercial Grease Trap Pumping for Busy Kitchens in the Chicago Area

The single most frequent cause of commercial or restaurant sewer systems backing up is the failure of a grease trap to be pumped. Suburban Plumbing Experts suggests that as soon as grease begins to hit the 1 ft. mark in a tank that is 4 ft. deep, the grease that is floating on top of your grease trap should be removed, as well as the sludge that is accumulating on the bottom of your tank.

A cleaned and regularly maintained grease trap by Suburban Plumbing Experts operates all the time to prevent your own business from ever having to deal with these types of issues.

We provide full commercial drain cleaning services and liquid waste pump-out services via our vacuum pump truck throughout Chicagoland. Suburban Plumbing Experts serves many commercial and restaurants in the area to get you the best solutions. Our restaurant plumbers serve over 15 Panda Express Restaurants and several local Subway Restaurants just to name a few of the businesses who utilize a grease trap maintenance program that we provide.

The Importance of Cleaning Your Traps for Health and Safety Compliance

Grease traps are a critical component of any commercial kitchen or food service operation. They act as the first line of defense between your kitchen and the municipal sewer system by capturing fats, oils, and grease (FOG) before they enter your drainage lines. Without regular cleaning and maintenance, these systems quickly become overloaded, leading to backups, odors, and potential health code violations.

A grease trap works by separating wastewater as it flows through the system—grease and oils rise to the top, while solids settle at the bottom, allowing cleaner water to exit into the sewer line. Over time, however, this separation process becomes less effective as buildup accumulates and reduces capacity.

That’s why routine pumping and maintenance are essential—not just for performance, but for compliance with Chicago health and environmental regulations. Regular service helps prevent system failure, protects your plumbing infrastructure, and keeps your kitchen operating safely and efficiently.

Here are a few key reasons consistent grease trap maintenance is so important:

Prevents Drain Clogs

Impact: FOG buildup solidifies and blocks drainage lines.

Consequence: Backups, slow drains, sewage overflow, costly repairs.

Ensures Efficient Drainage

Impact: Keeps wastewater flowing freely through your system.

Consequence: Sluggish sinks, operational disruption, plumbing strain.

Extends Grease Trap Lifespan

Impact: Prevents grease corrosion and internal damage.

Consequence: Structural failure and premature replacement costs.

Ensures Regulatory Compliance

Impact: Meets municipal maintenance requirements.

Consequence: Fines, penalties, legal issues, shutdown risk.

Prevents Odors & Pest Infestation

Impact: Eliminates foul smells and pest-attracting buildup.

Consequence: Health risks, sanitation concerns, reputation damage.

Protects the Environment

Impact: Prevents FOG from entering sewer systems.

Consequence: Sewer overflows, pollution, infrastructure damage.

Training Restaurant Staff on Grease Management Best Practices

While professional grease trap cleaning is essential, day-to-day kitchen practices play a major role in how quickly grease buildup develops. Proper staff training helps reduce preventable issues, maintain compliance, and extend the time between service calls.

Restaurant staff should be trained on correct grease disposal methods, including how and where to discard fats, oils, and food waste before it reaches the drain system. Consistent monitoring of sinks, prep stations, and dishwashing areas also helps identify early warning signs of drainage issues, such as slow flow or unusual odors.

When teams are properly trained and consistent in their practices, it reduces strain on the grease trap system and helps maintain a cleaner, more compliant kitchen environment overall.

Our Techniques for Maintaining Grease Interceptors in Commercial Kitchens

We deliver safe and efficient grease trap pump out services for restaurants and other businesses. Do you detect foul-smelling fumes from your drains, have sluggish drains, or any other drain-related problem, don't wait until you're faced with a backup!

Our vacuum pump truck service is the solution for grease trap clean outs to keep your sewer lines clean, prevent back-up sewer odors in your restaurant, and get your customers back to repeat business! We provide grease trap pumping service and then transport all wastes from your grease trap to the nearest treatment center in our network where it will be properly disposed of. This is equivalent to instant treatment and removal of grease trap waste.

If we pump out your restaurant grease trap and still find that there is a back-up or clog in your system, we can do either a powerful drain rodding or sewer line hydro jetting to get you thoroughly back up and running normal!

Our Detailed Grease Trap Cleaning Process

Our grease trap cleaning process is designed for maximum efficiency with minimal disruption to your business operations. We begin with a full inspection to assess the condition of your system and identify any buildup, damage, or early warning signs that could affect performance.

Next, we perform a complete evacuation of the grease trap, removing all grease, oils, fats, wastewater, and solid waste to ensure the system is fully cleared. Once emptied, we thoroughly clean and sanitize the interior using environmentally safe products that are effective on buildup while remaining safe for your plumbing system and compliant with environmental standards.

After cleaning is complete, we provide a detailed service report outlining the work performed, the current condition of your grease trap, and any recommended maintenance to help prevent future issues.

Our process is built on precision and consistency, using professional-grade equipment and proven methods to ensure every step is completed correctly. This allows us to maintain high performance standards while helping your business stay compliant and avoid unexpected downtime.

Real Questions Chicago Restaurant Owners Ask Us About Grease Traps

Q: How do I actually know when my grease trap needs to be cleaned — is there a rule of thumb?
A: The old industry standard is the "1/4 rule" — when the floating grease and solid layers together take up 25% of the trap's total depth, it's time to clean it. But honestly, the better answer is: don't wait until you can measure it. If your kitchen drains are slowing down, you're catching a foul smell near the trap, or you're getting backed up during a rush, those are your real warning signs. Most busy Chicagoland restaurants need cleaning every 4–8 weeks. Slower kitchens might stretch to every 3 months. We'll look at your volume and set a schedule that actually makes sense for your operation. For a full breakdown of Chicago's legal requirements, the 25% rule, record keeping obligations, and what violations cost, read our complete Chicago grease trap compliance guide.

Q: My grease trap backed up during dinner service last Saturday. Can you come out same day?
A: Yes — call us. A backed-up grease trap during service isn't just a plumbing problem, it's a health code problem and a revenue problem. We offer 24/7 emergency grease trap cleaning throughout Chicago and the suburbs. We'll get there, get it cleared, and get your kitchen back to running. Save our number now so you're not scrambling when it happens again.

Q: The city inspector is coming next week. Will my grease trap pass?
A: That depends on what's going on with it right now — but we can help you find out before the inspector does. We clean the trap, inspect the baffles, check for damage or buildup that could flag a violation, and document the service. If something needs attention, we tell you straight so you have time to fix it. A lot of restaurant owners call us specifically before scheduled inspections. It's a smart move.

Q: What actually happens during a grease trap cleaning — what am I paying for?
A: We pump out all the accumulated grease, solids, and wastewater from the trap. Then we scrape down the walls and baffles, flush the inlet and outlet lines, and inspect the whole unit for damage, wear, or anything that could cause a problem before your next service. You get a record of the cleaning with details on the trap's condition — which you'll want to keep on file for health department documentation purposes.

Q: How do you dispose of the grease? I don't want my restaurant connected to any violations.
A: All waste is removed and disposed of through licensed, EPA-compliant haulers. You'll have documentation of proper disposal — which matters if you're ever audited or inspected. We take that part seriously because your compliance record is tied to how your service provider handles it, not just what happens inside your kitchen.

Q: My grease trap smells terrible even right after it was just cleaned. What's going on?
A: That's usually one of two things — either the trap wasn't cleaned thoroughly enough (some companies just pump the top layer and call it done), or there's a baffle issue allowing gases to escape when they shouldn't be. It could also be a venting problem in your drain lines. We'll take a look and give you a real answer, not a guess. If a previous cleaning was done halfway, we'll catch that too.

Q: Can you set up a maintenance schedule so I don't have to think about this?
A: That's exactly what we recommend for any restaurant with consistent kitchen volume. We'll look at how busy your kitchen is, the size of your trap, and what the city requires, then put you on a recurring schedule with reminders. You stay compliant, your drains stay clear, and grease traps become one less thing on your plate. Reach out and we'll get it set up.

Q: How long does a cleaning actually take? I don't want my kitchen shut down for hours.
A: For most restaurant grease traps, the cleaning itself takes 30–60 minutes. Larger interceptors or traps that haven't been serviced in a while can run longer. We work around your kitchen schedule whenever we can — early mornings before prep, between meal services, whatever creates the least disruption. Just let us know your window and we'll make it work.

The person that answered the phone for my appointment; was friendly. The specialist that arrived; was very polite and friendly. The politeness is very important to me. I had a Company check my Furnace once; the Service rep. was rude. I contacted another Company for a replacement of the unit, and paid more. Politeness is very important to me. I would recommend Suburban Plumbing Experts to others.

This was a very pleasant experience for someone like me not used to hiring a contractor for a particular job. Mike and Walter of Suburban plumbing experts were able do the job in a very acceptable manner. It was timely, affordable and correctly done. They were even able to advise me on other things that were important to my home. I really appreciate how they were able to make room and get to me the same day. not only were they able to correct my gas piping problem, but also correct my stove top problem which i needed done as soon as possible. Not only was I happy with the job but so was my wife. She was happy that i used this company with the workers it supplied. I will have no problem recommending this company to others that that need things done in the home. Your business card is at the top of my cards. Thanks again Mike and Walter, well done. Mr Curtis
